A HPHT treated color diamond’s greatest merit must be its retained quality of polish and other properties. In stark contrast with naturally occurring fancy color diamonds and other colored precious stones, HPHT treated diamonds possess a polish that outshines any other stone. This means a blue diamond will sparkle more than a sapphire and a red diamond, in turn, more than a ruby. Nor has there ever been a black gem with a polish and sparkle as beautiful as a black diamonds.
Color diamonds produced with HPHT treatment are less valuable than natural white diamonds. This is not a result of inferior quality. Most of the diamonds used to produce colored diamonds are simply not natural white diamonds, and hence worth less than them to begin with.
Finding high quality naturally colored diamond is a difficult task, they are, in fact, highly valuable due to their rarity. Another advantage of using HPHT treatment to color diamonds is the option to customize the resulting color according to the client’s wishes, the process can even be done in an ecologically responsible manner.
The downside of this process is that only near perfectly pure or clear diamonds can be used. The stone that will receive the HPHT treatment should contain next to no inclusions, because they could lead to damage or even fracturing of the stone during the process.
As is explained in naturally colored diamonds, diamonds that were colored through HPHT treatment contain minor differences in crystalline structures or foreign elements that lead to the prevalence of a certain color in the stone. This means that the available colors a given diamond can be turned into are predetermined.
What is HPHT?
High Pressure, High Temperature (HPHT) is a technique used to create fancy color diamonds. By mimicking the natural circumstances under which a diamond is produced scientists can change a stone’s color. This is done with the help of high pressure and temperature that influence the elements and structures inside the diamond in such a way as to change its color. After the diamond goes through the process it is polished, this reveals its fancy new color.
