Sapphire belongs to the corundum family and is a transparent stone. It can come in many colors except red and has been found since ancient times. The first known deposits were in Sri Lanka. At DiamondsByMe, we offer blue sapphire, pink sapphire, and yellow sapphire in our jewelry. On this page, you will learn more about this precious gemstone.
Sapphire is the birthstone for September and is associated with the zodiac signs Virgo and Libra. The healing properties can vary by color, but for blue sapphire, it is said to stimulate communication and have a calming effect. Additionally, blue sapphire was historically known to preserve chastity and detect fraud or tragedy. It was also believed to protect the wearer from poison, plague, fever, or skin diseases.
In ancient times, it was thought that sapphire would grant the wearer honor, strength, and immortality, and it was a symbol of wealth.
Sapphire was also one of the stones in the breastplate of the Jewish high priest and is one of the nine stones in the Thai ‘Order of the Nine Gems,’ an order awarded to members of the royal Chakri family and highly esteemed Thai dignitaries.
Before the 19th century, all blue stones were referred to as sapphire. Since then, sapphire has been classified as a distinct group within the corundum family. It is a precious stone, sometimes even more valuable than natural diamonds, because large sapphires are particularly rare. Blue sapphire comes in various shades, from light sky blue to deep dark blue, with cornflower blue sapphires from Kashmir being the most highly valued.
The color tone of blue sapphire is closely related to its origin. For example, sapphires from Australia are so dark blue that they appear almost black, while those from Sri Lanka tend to be paler. Sapphire is most commonly found in India, Thailand, China, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar, East Africa, Cambodia, the United States, and Australia.
The color of blue sapphire is created by the combination of iron and titanium in the stone. Other colors of sapphire have different compositions. DiamondsByMe offers not only beautiful blue sapphires but also yellow and pink sapphires. Many stones are treated with heat to enhance their color (this is not possible with all gemstones).
Molecular formula of sapphire: Al2O3
Hardness of sapphire on the Mohs scale: 9
Sapphire can only be scratched by materials that are harder or of the same hardness. For example, a diamond can scratch a sapphire. The toughness of sapphire is good, so the stone will not break easily.
General care for sapphire: Sapphire, like ruby, is generally resistant to shocks and liquids. However, we recommend handling this gemstone with care.
Sapphire and ruby are similar in many ways, including in terms of imitations. Just as with ruby, the same types of imitations are used for sapphire, differing only in color. Examples include blue glass, blue tourmaline, and blue spinel. A good quality sapphire can be identified by its color and purity. The stone is intensely blue with a lot of life and good clarity.
Sapphire can be found in virtually all cuts. The most common cut is round faceted. In addition to this cut, there are many other possibilities, from an oval faceted cut to a cabochon, sometimes with a beautiful star effect, known as a star sapphire. The cutter of sapphire will always consider how the stone will be best showcased. For this reason, two oval-cut sapphires, for example, may have different thicknesses. One stone may be slightly flatter, while the other may have a more pronounced 'belly.' This is completely normal and part of the stone's character.
At DiamondsByMe, we offer sapphire in three different colors: blue, yellow, and pink. Each sapphire has its own character but will always provide a spectacular appearance. The sapphires from DiamondsByMe are generally transparent, with quality ranging from AA+ to AAA. Our blue sapphires have a deep, dark blue hue. Below are some examples of men's rings with sapphire that we have created for customers, to give you an idea of what you can expect from a blue sapphire at DiamondsByMe. If you order a piece of jewelry with sapphire from DiamondsByMe and later want to add another piece with sapphire to create a set, keep in mind that the colors of the sapphires will differ from each other. However, if you order a complete set at once, such as a sapphire necklace and sapphire earrings, our gemstone specialists can select sapphires that match well, so the colors of the different stones align as much as possible. This provides the best effect and is something to consider when placing an order.
